But with his new job, Biden brings in an astonishing array of security personnel, members of the media and White House officials, not to mention a parade of family members: his two sons, Ashley and Hunter; The fisherman’s wife, Melissa; grandchildren of Naomi, Finnegan, Macy, Natalie, Hunter Biden II, and Beau; Naomi’s fiancé is Peter Neal.
“There’s a little bit of excitement,” said Noah Karberg, assistant manager of Nantucket Memorial Airport. He noted that Al Jazeera had received former Secretary of State John Kerry and former Vice President Mike Pence. However, he asked his crew to stay a little later than usual for Air Force One’s arrival on Tuesday night.
“We have to deal with a really big plane,” he said.
Representative William Keating, D-Mass., said his phone line has been inundated with calls from residents describing the additional security presence on the island.
“These are the people who are used to celebrities coming and going,” said Mr. Keating, who represents Nantucket as well as Martha’s Vineyard, where Obama owns a home. “But I think it’s just a footnote.”
Biden took a break from Thanksgiving in Nantucket in 2015, just six months after Beau died of brain cancer at the age of 46. They went to Rome that year instead. The family has returned to the island occasionally since, but did not spend Thanksgiving on the island in 2019 due to travel commitments to the Biden presidential campaign. Last year, they stayed in Rehoboth, Dale, State, due to concerns about the pandemic.
“People missed him, but mostly sympathy,” said Mr. Fritsch.
The one thing the president won’t be able to escape during his recess is a reminder of the labor shortage that has plagued employers across the country, including Faregrounds Restaurant & Pudley’s Pub, where diners are greeted with a warning sign of potential delays.
